Jaipur is popularly known as the Pink City, but that is very much a misnomer for the slums in which many Jaipuris live. Not a hint of pink here – more the silver shimmer of corrugated metal. Rocks hold the ramshackle roofs in place. Rajasthan, India.

Jaipur the not-so-pink city

Jaipur, once capital of one of Rajasthan’s most powerful princely states, became known as the Pink City in the 19th century when the Maharaja ordered that the city centre be painted pink (a welcoming colour) to celebrate the visit of the Prince of Wales. It’s not so pink these days with alot of buildings now in disrepair.

Palace of Winds

The Hawa Mahal or Palace of Winds was built by the Maharaja of Jaipur to allow the women of the court to view the parades and goings-on in the streets below from “behind the curtain”, ie without compromising their modesty. Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.
